남재환 교수는 고려대학교 생물학과에서 학사, 석사, 박사 과정을 졸업하였고 미국 NIH에서 교환연구원 및 Visiting Fellow로 근무하였음. 이후 국립보건연구원 (現 질병관리청) 에서 보건연구관으로 근무하였으며 2005년부터 현재까지 가톨릭대학교 교수로써 근무하고 있음. 1997년부터 현재까지 미국바이러스학회 정회원이며 2011년부터 현재까지 International Journal of Obesity의 Editorial Board로 활동하고 있으며 2024년 현재 대한바이러스학회 차기회장직을 겸하고 있음. 주요 관심사로는 RNA를 면역증강제로 활용한 바이러스 백신 개발을 진행하고 있음. 또한 현재 차세대 백신 플랫폼으로써 떠오르고 있는 mRNA vaccine과 관련된 다양한 연구를 진행하고 있으며 다양한 바이러스 백신 및 암 백신 개발, mRNA 전달용 지질 전달체 개발, mRNA 백신의 면역 효과와 부작용 기전 연구 등을 수행하고 있음. 여러 편의 mRNA 관련 논문을 출판하였으며 특히 국내에서는 최초로 mRNA를 활용한 면역 항암 치료제 연구 성과를 논문으로 출판하였음. 이상의 활동을 통해 국내에서 mRNA 분야의 연구 인프라 구축과 투자 확대에 기여하고 있음.
Professor Nam Jaehwan is a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Science at the Catholic University of Korea. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Korea University's Department of Biology and worked at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) as an exchange researcher and visiting fellow. Subsequently, he served as a health researcher at the National Institute of Health (now the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency) before joining the Catholic University of Korea as a professor in 2005. Since 1997, he has been a regular member of the American Society for Virology and has served on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Obesity since 2011. As of 2024, he also holds the position of the next president of the Korean Society for Virology. His primary research focuses on developing virus vaccines using RNA as an immune enhancer. He is also actively involved in various studies related to mRNA vaccines, including their immune effects, side effects, and delivery mechanisms. Professor Nam has published numerous papers on mRNA-related topics and notably pioneered research on immune anti-cancer therapy using mRNA in Korea. Through his work, he contributes to expanding research infrastructure and investment in the mRNA field domestically.
